Well, That Was Something That Happened

So, some… time… ago, BDH and I got a Costco membership. Against my better judgement, I have to say. Because you know me, and you know I am as cheap as a cheap thing that is cheap, and I hate spending money.

But BDH and I thought maybe it might actually be a way to SAVE money, this whole “buying certain things in bulk” idea, so we decided to give it a go.

And that is when we bought giant bags of apples for the aforementioned Apple Jelly Debacle of ’16. Let us not speak of it again.

But also, we bought huge bags of potatoes and carrots.  Continue reading

Stair Repair, Part the First

So I said I would tell you about our project to reclaim our stairs, and indeed I shall. Or, at least, I’ll tell you about the first part, because we’re nowhere near finished yet.

I don’t suspect we’ll be finished for a very long time, mainly because Budget. Also, if I am being completely honest, because Procrastination.

So if I were you I would settle myself in for a long wait, with a not-terribly-exciting finish when all is said and done. Continue reading

Did You Write Anything?

So, this morning BDH asked me, “Did you write anything recently?”

(Yeah, he reads my ramblings too. You’re not alone in your shame.)

And I hadn’t, so I said so. But it’s not for want of things to write about. It’s just sometimes, there’s A LOT. And most of it is boring, everyday life stuff. (There’s a good reason I have that as one of my categories.)

Basically, there are periods of my life that fit into one of the following two categories:

  1. all about That Girl, and
  2. everything else.

An Update From the DIY Trenches

So, remember how last week I was all DO ALL THE THINGS!!

Well, we did!

We started two projects in the last week. The first was to redo our stairs — from carpet to wood — and the second was to make our own apple jelly.

Remember when you were younger, and you would go out with friends and drink a lot, and then wake up the next morning and swear “I am NEVER. DRINKING. AGAIN”? Continue reading

Do All the Things!!

Well, we’re into the second week of September (well, third, actually, if you count those first three days as a week OKAY FINE, TWO AND A HALF WEEKS THEN) and the weather is settling down and our routines are starting to sort themselves and all seems well.

Except now I want to DO ALL THE THINGS!

I think it’s the return of free time after managing That Girl all summer. Suddenly I have my day to myself again. And I just need to fill it. Continue reading

A Full June

Well now. Look at what the cat dragged in. I have no excuse. Honestly. I could give you some song and dance about life and all its complexity, but honestly?

  1. It’s been a busy few weeks, and
  2. I’ve had nothing useful to say.

It’s just been that kind of month. We’ve all had them. Plus, with all the… sadness and violence and crap going on in the world… I’ve been feeling sadness and anger and the need to blanketfort quite a bit. And we’ve all hear enough about that stuff, for the time being. For a lifetime, really.

So instead, my focus had been turned inward — and by that I mean I have been taking time to focus on my little life here with my house and family. And there’s been a lot to do. Continue reading

Change in the Air

Summer is drawing to a close. It’s been a beautiful summer, mostly, in terms of weather; the best we have had in years. We were away and missed the humidity festival that was Ontario in late July, so for us, we’ve really enjoyed some gorgeous summer weather.

So in that respect, I am kind of sad to see the end of summer. I would like the lovely weather to carry on and on.

But it does not. The past few days have been downright cool. The pool is starting to have a hard time holding the heat during the cool overnight temperatures. The tip-top of our tree had started to turn gold. And that means fall is upon us.

Even though it is still officially summer, September starts next week and with it, school is back in the following week. And really, that means fall to me.

And I am okay with that, really. Fall is my favourite season.

I like the change from summer to fall. There are lots of good things happening at this time of year. Continue reading

Stepping Outside Our Comfort Zone

As I mentioned last week, we’ve put new flooring in our once-was-living-room-then-became-playroom-and-once-again-will-be-living-room. And now, I have pictures.

I think I mentioned that in our tiny home of bad spaces, we have an open-ish main floor. It was once a tiny kitchen and tiny living room but, once Stinkerbelle came home, we took all the furniture (there was not much to begin with) out of the living room, leaving just an old TV and an Ikea chair, and added a bunch of toys. And hey, presto! A playroom.

It worked well. For five years, I could work in the kitchen and cats and kid could play, supervised, with easy access to toys and snacks and doors to go outside (well, not the cats, but me and the kid).

But, during said time, the already showing-its-wear carpet took quite a beating, with messes and barfing and peeing and spilling of both the human and the feline variety. Over the years, it’s fair to say our poor little carpet steam cleaner got quite a workout. Continue reading

Technical Difficulties. Please Stand By.

So, we’ve been doing lots of work around the house, yeah? And I have been wanting to tell you all about our BRAND NEW FAUX HARDWOOD LAMINATE FLOOR OMG.

We were careful to take lots of pictures of our floor-in-progress — pulling up the carpet, all the schmutz underneath said carpet, cutting the flooring, putting in the flooring, admiring the flooring — because we wanted a record of our work and our progress.

The problem is… most of the pics are on BDH’s new Crapberry phone device thingy. And for some reason, he’s having difficulty sending them to me. But when he does, I WILL POST OHYESIWILL.

Until then… enjoy this adorable picture of Duncan, today at lunchtime.

Levelling Up

So, it’s been a busy couple of weeks around here, because OMG PROJECTS. And, to be fair, a visit from a much-missed friend from Australia, and a long weekend. So much going on, and much of it good.

But let’s focus on the home improvement stuff, because SO EXCITE. Seriously. I’ve been waiting years — YEARS, I SAY — to be able to accomplish some of these things, so I have to say, I’m pretty pleased.

Let’s start with the weekend before last, in which farewell was bid to an apple tree, a shed was built, and a scalp was sunburned. Continue reading

Inside and Out

We have been plugging away at our home improvement projects. And when I say “plugging away”, what I mean is “not doing much of anything at all, really”.

Well, these things take time.

We finished painting our one-day-to-be-reclaimed living room, with two coats of paint. And we were eager to get on to putting in the flooring, so we made a decision on the type and colour, and BDH ran out to Home Despot and bought the flooring, as well as underlay and supplies and tools.

And then we found that you have to let your flooring sit and acclimate or acclimatize or some such word meaning “sit around and get used to the environment” or something, for at least THREE DAYS. Continue reading

SLOW! Speed Reduced. Construction Zone.

Welcome to spring and home renovation season! We are currently living in a construction zone.

Our house has needed some work since… well, since we moved in, honestly. But money and time can be scarce, not to mention the human resources (two tired people like us) to get the job done. But this year, we decided to bite the bullet and just get started.

It took a little prioritizing. We have so many things that we need or want to do, and very limited funds to do so. So, it was a matter of just making some decisions and getting started.  Continue reading

Not A Valid Excuse

OH MY DOG I HAVE SUCKED AT POSTING RECENTLY. I really haven’t got a good excuse. I don’t. There’s just been a lot of stuff going on and it’s been hard to find the time.

NO THAT’S NOT A EUPHEMISM, EVERYTHING IS FINE. Really, there’s just been a lot of actual stuff going on. It’s been not exactly busy, but I’ve had a lot of things taking up my brainspace and my time recently.

One of those things has been getting back on the fitness wagon. Again. Remember I mentioned that Cinnamon was upset because, during the Christmas holidays, we rearranged and redecorated the basement, “her” basement space? Yeah. Well, what we did, as cheaply as we could, was create a little exercise studio down there.

Now, our basement is not finished (yet) and we haven’t a ton of money to spare (yet), but over the holidays we took advantage of the Boxing Day/Week sales and decided to do a few things to make a space to work out and do yoga. So, we cleaned out excess junk, reorganized the rest of the junk, and then cleaned a space for our exercise machines (bike, treadmill, elliptical). We then hung some curtains to create another space where we put down some industrial carpet tiles and an area rug, and that’s our yoga space. As the year goes on and if we have a little free cash, we’ll probably think about putting in electrical and putting up some drywall if we can, but for now, it’s a cozy, welcoming place to do our yoga.

So what that means is that every day, we’re diligently exercising and logging our exercise online, and logging what we eat, and along with some family members, we have a little group to encourage each other along a more fit and healthy path. It takes a fair bit of time, but we’re starting to get into the swing of it a little bit. Still, it does take time and effort to keep yourself honest and update your numbers each day. As well, it’s an hour or so a day of exercise, but like I said, that’s been quite fun because of our new space. Which we really love, and that Cinnamon hates.

Which brings me to another time-suck: the perils of the unhappy peeing kitty. As you know, Cinnamon has taken to peeing in her beds, and on one occasion, on my bedroom floor. We suspected she was freaked out by the changes, as she often is, but just to be on the safe side, we took her to the vet for a full checkup. And, happily, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with her except she’s a little old lady. But, unhappily, that means we have a behavioural problem that is a little harder to troubleshoot.

But thanks to our awesome vet here, as well as an awesome vet who reads this blog who chimed in with some fabulous advice, we’re trying a couple of things to see if we can help her Cat Up and adjust to the new place. It’s still too early to tell, and she has peed a couple of times since starting her new “meds”. But on the plus side, she’s been coming and joining us in our yoga space in the last couple of days, happy and purring and chirruping at us, or curling up in a bed under the TV and just hanging out. Either way, it’s a marked improvement. AND, for those of you keeping score, SHE PEED IN HER LITTER BOX, RIGHT IN FRONT OF US, LAST NIGHT. AND THEN AGAIN THIS MORNING. So. Fingers crossed she is getting acclimatized.

The other thing that has occupied my time, or rather not, is being sick. Stinkerbelle was down with a cold for a week, as I mentioned, and it was one of those colds where she had a fever and just wanted to lie around. And that’s fine. But what’s taken my time is that she then ever-so-generously gave it to me. And so I just wanted to lie around. That was fun.

That, combined with a lack of sleep — my new exercise regime has meant the aggravation of my knee issues, which means I am awakened at least once a night and often three and four times a night by pain that needs dealing with in some way, with stretching or massage or getting up and walking about — has made me a treat to live with, let me tell you. But, we’re getting ice on it, and I am taking copious amounts of the strongest analgesics we own, and soon I’ll be starting physio again, so you just get on with it.

So, yeah. I don’t really have any excuse for not posting recently other than I’m a right bastard. But you know, I’m a more fit, more Zen, kitty-managing, cold-fighting, pain-tolerating bastard these days, so that’s got to count for something, right?
