It Was Bound To Happen

So, Stinkerbelle was back in school last week. She went for an hour (staggered start) on Tuesday, then for the full morning on Thursday. As well, she’s going on Fridays which is a separate class, so they had a staggered start as well — so, an hour on Friday too.

It wasn’t a full week, but it was enough to get her all excited and back into the swing of things. YAY! THREE SCHOOL DAYS A WEEK! HUZZAH!

But, despite being in school for such a short time, in the first week of school, That Girl also managed to bring home a cold. Her first cold of the school year. BOO! THE FIRST OF MANY BUGS FROM SCHOOL! NUTS!

And as June once so eloquently put it, kids this age are just mobile petri dishes, so we’re all sick with colds. As sure as the sun rises in the morning, whatever bug a kid brings home from school gets shared with the whole family. It was bound to happen.

THAT DOESN’T MEAN I HAVE TO BE HAPPY ABOUT IT. Insert peevish face here.

Now, Stinkerbelle’s doctor told us a couple of years ago that kids always start showing up in his office with ear infections around the third week of September. So I am sure that we’ll be seeing one of those soon too. Fortunately, though, That Girl is old enough that she can actually complain, WITH WORDS, so that will be a novel experience for us this year. In years past it was just a guessing game, as That Girl wouldn’t complain about it if her hair were on fire. She’s just not that kind of kid.

So we have that to look forward to as well.

And after last year’s Festival of Bronchial Complaints, we’re getting better and jumping on the bandwagon and getting herself and us treated for whatever comes along. So a flu shot will be in order, as well as whatever else we need whenever it comes up. Although if preventative medicine is not an option, we’re getting good at hanging around the emergency room at GGH.

Fortunately, this first cold hasn’t been all that bad. We’ve been pooped out for a couple of days, had a bit of a fever, sneezing and blowing our noses for all we’re worth bytimes, but mostly it’s been one of those little aggravating numbers that just annoys more than anything. A whiny little tickle at the back of the throat. Some painful sinuses. A kid with hot and cold running boogers.

But we’ve seen worse. And we will see worse. It’s just the second week of school. There’s LOADS MORE to come.

It was funny, when I think back to when Stinkerbelle was wee tiny, and how we’d try not to kiss her or each other, and were all neurotic about handling kleenexes and whatever. Like THAT was going to keep the going bugs at bay. SO MANY LOLS.

Now we’re all YEAH WHATEVS. Make sure we’re stocked up with whatever meds are required at the start of it, and just ride it out. There’s nothing you can do. MAKE PEACE WITH THE VIRUSES AND MOVE ON.

But, one thing that keeps me going, moving forward, like the pot of gold at the end of the cold and flu season rainbow: ONLY TWO MORE YEARS UNTIL SHE CAN TAKE COLD MEDICATION. And a happy day that will be, too.

  1. Sorry to hear about the colds but like you said it goes with school, like peanut butter and jelly or peanut butter and honey.
